What are the essentials of a social media strategy?

Any and every type of social media strategy is different.

It is as uniquely different as any one type of person on this planet.

With that being said, there are also some common similarities.

After all, we’re all human, aye ;).

So, let’s touch on some of the basics.

ONE: FOCUS.

Also known as ‘goals’.

I want you to answer the most basic question first:

WHY do you want to market on social media?

{Regardless of platform!}

Are you looking to get more sales for your service based business?

Are you launching an app soon and are trying to increase your visibility?

Are you wanting to build true relationships with people in your industry?

Are you fill-in-the-blank…

You want to make sure, however, not to set too many long-term goals.

Almost nothing else in business changes as quickly as the social media landscapes.

With new platforms popping up every day and content distribution possibilities, you want to stay on top of the game.

However, you also want to make sure to focus your social media attempts.

Being on too many platforms at the same time, will dilute your focus and you will end up half-assing a lot of your social media marketing attempts (pardon my French).

TWO: LISTEN.

This one is often overlooked.

What do I mean by that?

I want you to pay attention to where your audience is hanging out at.

Where are you connecting already with them?

Where do you build relationships with them?

Don’t listen too much to trends.

Trends pass. True relationships that you have built up last.

Pay more attention to where you can find ‘your people’.

Got it ;)?

THREE: MESSAGING.

This one’s a tricky one.

You want your messaging to stay the same across different social media channels.

Who are you?

What value get people from you when they visit any one type of your social media platforms?

Are you a holistic health coach? Present yourself as one.

Are you an actress? Great! Be that.

Are you a fashion tech entrepreneur? Stick to that.

Don’t be a holistic health coach AND an actress AND a fashion tech entrepreneur all at the same time.

It comes down to messaging as well as focus again.

Side note: It is okay, however, to showcase your hobbies. So, for instance, you can present yourself as a holistic health coach who is ALSO addicted to fashion.

FOUR: CONTENT.

If you have nothing to say, don’t say it.

Don’t force it.

You know what would be a better strategy on days you feel completely uninspired?

To post something like this on your social media together with a nice picture of you,

I never thought a day like this would happen but damn, it did!

I feel completely uninspired today :(… even after drowning like 6 cups of my favorite Starbucks coffee.

What do you do on days that you feel completely uninspired?

Three things happen here that I want you to pay attention to.

You are authentic. You’ve stayed real.

You’ve engaged your audience through a QUESTION at the end.

You’ve actually created content even though you thought you couldn’t that day.

That wasn’t too hard now, or was it ;).

FIVE: THEME.

Theme goes hand in hand with branding.

What is your business, company or brand about?

Here is a little exercise for you:

Right now, I want you to decide on 5 theme words for you and stick to them throughout all your social media marketing.

Deal?

Want to know what mine are as an example?

Classy. Entertaining. Value-packed. Innovative. Creative.

In everything I do, I am working hard on portraying and communicating my THEME WORDS to my audience. I want people to get to know me as that.

SIX: ACTION.

It’s like with everything, isn’t it?

The more you do it, the better you get at it.

No on was born an expert at that.

I once took the time (it was literally HOURS to be precise) and went ALL the way back to fashion icon/blogger Chiara Ferragni’s Instagram as well as digital entrepreneur Marie Forelo’s Youtube to look at how they started out at…

And let me tell you that, it ain’t pretty.

Really.

If you believe for one second that any expert/celebrity/influencer/etc. was as perfect in what it is that they are doing as they were when they started out years prior… you’re lying to yourself.

And, it will give you an excuse to not take action.

So, just don’t.

If you have to, take any one of your favorite social media influencers and go all the way back… to the first few posts when they just started.

Most are still figuring out their style AND voice.

You need to take consistent action in order to get better, which brings me to my final point…

SEVEN: CONSISTENCY.

I’ve saved the biggest tip for last.

If there’s anything you take away from this article… it is to stay consistent in any and all of your social media marketing attempts.

Yes, it is dramatic if you even forget one day!

I’m NOT exaggerating.

Think of tech entrepreneur, Gary Vaynerchuck, or fashion blogger icon, Chiara Ferragni.

There is LITERALLY not one day that goes by where they do not post on their respected social media platforms of choice.

This is where hustle comes in.

This is where consistent and disciplined business owners and entrepreneurs get ahead of their competition.

Do it.

And do it well.
